Case Study: Female Logic

A variety of memes featuring women play on the notion of 'women's logic' - or perceived lack thereof.

The trivialising of women's logic is also referenced in memes featuring 'nerdy males' who are friend-zoned by women.

Stimulus I: Female Logic

“It’s definitely a stab at women”, said a male participant. “It’s saying that women do those things for attention, and are whinging. They might be true for some women but definitely not all. Especially the first one, women get hurt like this in relationships too”, pointing out that although this particular social interaction can swing both ways, women are the ones who get stuck with the label.

The second meme caused a lot more controversy in the group.

One male participant believes that some girls show their skin at the gym provocatively, although he acknowledges “you should be able to dress the way you want.”:

“If I see a girl dressed like that I assume she wants to be looked at – but you don’t know for sure. Some people are just comfortable in their skin.”

Another male strongly agreed that this meme represents women who desire attention:

“I’ve seen this at the gym all the time – they want guys to notice them. If she is with that she has probably been with a lot of guys.” He said he would have no qualms tagging his friends in a meme like this.

A female participant passionately disagreed. She said the meme was absolutely not funny and misrepresents women. As a regular gym-goer, she acknowledges it suits a lot of girls better to wear fewer clothes rather than “baggy, sweaty T-shirts”, and says this is in no way an invitation to be looked at by men. She’d scroll past the meme on a social media feed, even if someone had tagged her in it for a laugh.

Pantelei: It's saying that women are doing it for attention . . . WHINGING - women get hurt from relationships too. It might be true for some, but not all of them. It's a stab at women.

2. There are some girls who I do think show a bit of skin - provocative - you should be able to dress the way you want. If I see a girl like that I would assume she'd want to be looked at - but you don't know for sure , some people are just comfortable in their skin.

Mathre: I've seen this at the gym all the time - they want guys to notice them - if she is looking like that obviously she has been with a lot of guys. Would tag friends in the meme. Not funny

Natalie: shittily - they take away women's ability to gym in peace - this is why we have all women's gyms.. Scroll pas the memes. Not funny

Stimulus II: The Friend Zone

Source: Meme Crunch

One male found the Willy Wonka meme amusing: “I’m not saying it’s true for everyone, but it’s funny. It could be a stab, it’s a broad assumption. If someone tagged me I’d respond and laugh with friends but wouldn’t really interact with it otherwise. I think the first one could offend men, but it’s extreme to imply that all women friend-zone."

A second male said that the memes represent how men see women in terms of relationships. Interestingly, this correlates with the idea of the internet as a "male dominated space", which is discussed in my research proposal.

A female disagreed, stating that the memes were more about how women see men.
